History of Pack 427

Cub Scout Pack 427 has been based in the English Hill neighborhood of Redmond, WA for almost 40 years. A pioneer in the Family Pack program, we were among the first packs to officially welcome girls. We also were part of the Lion den pilot program, when kindergarteners were welcomes to Cub Scouts, and we are currently part of the family den pilot program, which allows mixed gender dens.

Our Organization

We are part of the Northern Trails District of the Chief Seattle Council. Our charter organization is the English Hill Scouting Supporters.

Our Families

Many of our scouts attend Sunrise Elementary but we also have scouts who attend Northshore Family Partnership, who are remote schooled, who are homeschooled, who attend other NSD and LWSD schools, and who attend local private schools. All are welcome.

Role of Parents and Family

Parents or adult guardians, sometimes called Akelas in Cub Scouting, play a very special role in guiding their scout. They are expected to attend den and pack activities with their scout, especially in the younger dens. (Akelas are required to attend all scouting events with kindergarteners and 1st graders.) In order to provide our scouts with all the wonderful opportunities available to Cub Scouts, we need many parent volunteers to take on roles with den and pack leadership as well.

With the exception of some council-level activities like summer camp, non-scout siblings of all ages are welcome to attend all events that their parent and sibling are attending. We always have a large contingent of toddler and preschooler “Dragon Scouts”, so-called because they are dragged on to all the events.

Fundraising and the Costs of Scouting

Our pack does not fundraise. We don’t do popcorn sales or other fundraisers. Our dues cover our expenses for the year. We try and keep dues as low as we can, and scholarships are available. If the costs of scouting are a barrier to your family’s participation, please talk to one of the committee members including Cubmaster Jon, Committee Chair Rachel, or Treasurer Sue. Scholarships are available for registration, uniforms and camping through the pack and council.

Packs and Dens

Scouts are divided into dens by grade, with 5-15 scouts to a den along with a parent Den Leader and Assistant Den Leader. Some activities are done with more than one den. All the dens together are called a pack. For more information on how scouting is organized, see https://www.scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/how-cub-scouting-is-organized/.
